Western Illinois University will soon be smoke-free.
The action goes hand-in-hand with Illinois’ Smoke-Free Campus Act. The legislation notes that smoking will not be allowed on the “campus of a State-supported institution or higher education.”
In the legislation, the General Assembly cited health hazards from second-hand smoke as a reason for this action. The legislation noted that according to a 2006 report from the Surgeon General “there is no risk-free level of exposure to secondhand smoke.”
The law goes into effect July 1, 2015.
