The Supreme Court's decision on whether states have the power to ban same-sex marriage will shape the future for Augustana College senior Darien Marion-Burton.

In fact, Darien is in the middle of searching for a place to start his career, and has already ruled out states like Indiana. Back in March, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence signed the controversial Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which critics of the law argued would allow businesses to deny service to the LGBT community.

"It affects where you are going to get a job. It affects where you are going to live," Darien said.

"Forty years ago we were talking about civil rights and we were talking about black rights," he said. "I think that, you know, in ways black rights have become gay rights."

If there's anyone who can relate to Darien, it's Augustana College professor Laura Hartman.

The educator, who says she and her spouse have fought for gay rights for years, told News 8 the United States has come along way on the fight for marriage equality, but added the fight is not over.

"For people who are directly affected by this issue, it's already too late," Hartman said. "They wish they could have had those rights yesterday."

The marriage equality advocate didn't hesitate when saying she believed the Supreme Court would rule in favor of marriage equality.

"The movement towards marriage equality is a movement towards justice," Hartman said.

A Supreme Court decision is expected sometime in June.
