A worker in Singapore climbed to the second floor of a building when he spotted a toddler suspended from a balcony. The little girl had her head stuck in between railings of a drying rack and was trying to free herself.

One person first spotted the toddler and yelled for help, according to a report by the Straits Times out of Singapore. Two men tried to climb up onto a nearby ledge but were unable. A nearby worker who had been doing road repairs then came to help.

In the video, the man is seen holding the toddler up, trying to help her get unstuck.  He told the Straits Times that he asked his friend to go on the other side to help pull the baby back through the bars.

The child was eventually pulled to safety.

“Our aim was to save the baby and we saved her,” said one of the men, according to the Straits Times report.

Both men were given the Singapore Civil Defense Force Public Spiritedness Awards for their heroic deed.

The report indicated that the little girl’s parents have gotten backlash after the video was shared online. Her mother said that she had left for a short time to take another child to school.

“It’s walking distance, so I really didn’t expect things to happen this way,” said the child’s mother. “Usually she would be in school but yesterday she was sleeping, so I didn’t wake her up… I didn’t expect her to open the master bedroom door and go to the kitchen.”

The little girl’s mother told the Straits Times that authorities gathered the child may have been trying to get an iPad that had fallen when she got stuck in the railings.

The Straits Times reported that the parents have since installed an additional latch on the door leading to the balcony.
