How to save money on your energy bills during the summer

According to MidAmerican Energy, cool air can escape just as easily during the summer as heat can escape during the winter.

When it comes to energy efficiency during the summer, many people don't realize there are steps they can take to save more money during the warmer months.

According to MidAmerican Energy, cool air can escape just as easily during the summer as heat can escape during the winter.

"A lot of people aren't necessarily thinking about conserving energy as much in the other months of the year as they are the winter, but really, all year-round is a great time to conserve energy," said Ashton Newman, from MidAmerican Energy. "The attic [and] the walls [are where] air can escape and so that's a big area where we find people can save money and conserve energy."

Newman said homeowners should get their homes checked for those energy conservation areas so they can find out just home much money they can save. she said MidAmerican Energy provides free home-checks for all of their customers who own homes over 10-years-old.

"That's really an opportunity where an energy expert can come in and take a look around at the different areas for saving money and conserving energy," said Newman.

Newman said insulating their walls, attics and basements are a big energy saver, as well as the weather stripping around doors and caulking around windows.

Newman also suggests upgrading appliances, using energy-efficient light bulbs, and using low-flow shower heads.
