An expansion could be coming to a local high school and while some student athletes are definitely on board with the plan it could come down to improved safety for everyone.

Bettendorf High School's wrestling practice room needs a little updating.

"That room is what we call like the dungeon. It's pretty dark and stuff and it gets hot in there as well," said wrestler, Fredy Stroker.

Not to mention the room needs to be bigger. Right now the team has to hold split practices because not everyone can fit in the practice room at the same time. The proposed plan is to add-on the back of the school and that larger space would serve more than just wrestlers.

"Creating it in such a way that it would qualify as a tornado safe room," said Superintendent Theron Schutte.

Half of the room would be under ground and would be able to withstand an E-F5 tornado. The project would cost $3.7 million. The district has applied for state and federal funds, which would cover two-thirds of the project. A decision is expected by July.
