Kai Miller guilty in fatal Davenport drunk driving crash

A week-long trial ended with a local man found guilty of killing two people in a drunk driving crash.

A week-long trial ended with a local man found guilty of killing two people in a drunk driving crash.

Kai Miller sat still, expressionless as the judge read guilty to all seven counts; four counts of operating while intoxicated and three counts of recklessness. Back in September 2014, Miller's car crashed into another car on Brady Street. Miller, who was drunk,  was driving around 70 miles per hour in a 35 miles per hour zone.

In the other car was driver Andy Adams, and passengers Danny Debacker and Kaleb Hougland. Kaleb was the only survivor.

The defense argued that both drivers were impaired. Adams tested positively for alcohol and marijuana and was above the legal limit. In the end the jurors found Miller guilty.

Andy's mom, Melissa, said there's no winner.

"I don't feel hatred toward Kai Miller and, of course, not his family. I hate what he did, and I hate what happened and the impacts its had on our families and thousands of friends, but there's nothing that I can do to bring him back," she said.

While both families know their lives will never be the same, Melissa hopes people will learn from the mistakes made that night.

"Not that anyone shouldn't go out and have a good time, but that's what cabs and designated drivers are for. So hopefully out of this tragedy maybe some good things will come of this," said Melissa.

Miller will remain in custody until his sentencing. A sentence date hasn't been set yet.
