A local school district is working to install some new anti-bullying policies. Putting them in place is a community wide effort.

It was an intimate conversation between parents, board members and district officials Thursday night at Longfellow Elementary School.

"Everything is changing just as academics are changing, global society is changing in every aspect," said Kathy Ruggeberg, Director of teaching and learning.

This is just one of the many Listening and Learning sessions the Rock Island/Milan school district is holding over the next couple of weeks. The idea is to open the discussion up to parents on what policies they would like to see in place.

"We're here to listen. We aren't here to explain procedures, to explain what consequences might have occurred. We're here listen from parents and even from students and community members," said Ruggeberg.

Ideas that were suggested included better communication between staff and parents, to teaching students not to bully and also to stand up and defend others in a positive way. The district is also working to align their handbooks and making them more reader friendly.

The Listening and Learning sessions will go through the 22nd.
