The trial of a Quad City man accused of killing two people in a drunk driving accident is underway.

Kai Miller is charged with homicide by vehicle in the deaths of Andy Adams and Danny DeBacker.

He's accused of smashing his vehicle into another car on Brady Street last September, driving drunk and going about 70 mph in a 35 mph zone, after a night of drinking in downtown Davenport.

"I had no idea what was going on, the next thing I remember I thought I was dead because I couldn't feel anything", said Kaleb Hougland, the only survivor in the car.

Hougland told the jury he is a Marine Corps reservist who now is being treated for post traumatic stress syndrome, not because of war, but because of the aftermath of the crash that killed his two high school buddies.

The mothers of the two victims who died also took the stand, recounting the nightmare news they received in the middle of the night.

Prosecutors told the jury in opening statements that one of the victims, Adams, tested positive for alcohol and marijuana and was above the legal limit. But he said, the car was stopped at a stop sign and was not a factor at the time of the crash.

Testimony resumes in Scott County on Wednesday.
