After state officials said the camera was ineffective, there will be no more red light and speed camera enforcement at the intersection of Elmore Avenue and Kimberly Road in Davenport, Iowa.

Analysis reported by the Iowa Department of Transportation indicated the number of crashes there increased after the red light camera was activated in 2004, and that the average yearly number of crashes had also increased since the speed camera was activated in 2007. A study done by Iowa State University also indicated crashes had increased since cameras were installed at Elmore and Kimberly.

As a result of the analysis, the state instructed Davenport officials to “permanently remove the cameras at this intersection,” the report said. The deadline for action was set for Friday, April 17, 2015.

“Citations will no longer be issued and automated traffic enforcement signage will be removed by Wednesday (April 15), ahead of the April 17 deadline,” said a report from the city’s information website, Davenport Today. The camera systems could remain in place as long as the signs warning of photo enforcement are removed, and as long as the cameras are not used for enforcement, the report said. So, the city intended to leave the cameras in place.

Traffic cameras at five other Davenport locations would be allowed to remain in place and operational at 35th and Harrison, Kimberly Road and Brady Street, Kimberly Road and Welcome Way, at the 2600 block of Brady and at the 1200 block of East River Drive. Additional, or more-visible, signs were to be installed at the 2600 Brady Street location and at the intersection of 35th and Harrison streets.

The state also approved continued use of traffic cameras at three intersections in Muscatine, Iowa, but ordered city officials there to remove their enforcement camera at U.S. 61 and University Drive.
