Damage was widespread as cleanup began the morning after storms, which included at least one tornado, struck Clinton County, Iowa.
A National Weather Service trained spotter reported a tornado one mile southeast of Clinton Municipal Airport at about 5:45 p.m. Thursday. Law enforcement reported a funnel cloud just west of Clinton near the airport at about
that same time.
The day after the storm, the National Weather Service confirmed a tornado struck near the airport, and their initial estimates were that it was EF-0 (winds of less than 73 miles per hour) to EF-1 (winds between 73 and 112 miles per hour) in intensity. Rainfall amounts were reported between a quarter-inch and 1.4 inches during the storm.
Hail size ranged between a half-inch to two inches in diameter, and wind gusts were reported between 50 and 70 miles per hour that toppled trees, downed branches and even overturned tractor trailers.
Sirens went off twice for two separate tornado warnings in Low Moor, Camanche and in the City of Clinton.
Some of the heaviest damage was reported in DeWitt, including damage at the Peterson farm and to the DeWitt Travel Mart on Highway 30.
More than 2,000 Alliant Energy customers lost power during the storm according to Clinton County Emergency Management Coordinator Chance Kness. No injuries were reported.
