A boarder was arrested after a confrontation that, police say, prompted his 76-year-old landlord to fire a gun in the home they shared.

Robert Mallek, 57, offered labor in exchange for room and board at a home in the 2700 block of 90th Street near Alexis, Illinois, according to Warren County Sheriff Martin Edwards.  Mallek allegedly battered the 76-year-old woman with whom he lives, as the two argued Wednesday, April 8, 2015.

“The woman entered her bedroom, and fired a shot through the door as the man stood on the other side,” Sheriff Edwards said.  “The woman left the bedroom, fired another round into the ceiling, then left the house.”

The woman went to a neighbor’s house where an ambulance and police were called.  Police recovered a .22 pistol from the woman and she was taken by ambulance to a hospital for evaluation and treatment; the nature and severity of her injuries was not released.

Mallek was arrested and charged with aggravated battery, Edwards said.  Mallek was held in the Warren County Jail.
