End of the line for Milan Indian Summerfest

Organizers of the Milan Indian Summerfest tell WQAD the party is over after this year.

A family tradition in Milan for the past 58 years is coming to an end after Labor Day weekend.

Organizers of the Milan Indian Summerfest tell WQAD the party is over after this year.

"It's sad. We can't get enough young people to come on board and help, so it's very difficult to run a festival if you don't have volunteers,," said Chuck Van Blair, a former chairman of the fest.

Five civic organizations help run the event and used it as a fundraiser, but voted to discontinue it last month.

Delores "Squirt" Wynn has been involved since 1958, and says it's a sad announcement for the community.

"I just feel it's something that promotes Milan and if you live here why don't you promote it?  But, people don't volunteer and join things like they did years ago,"  she said.

The pageant associated with the festival has been cancelled for this last year, but the bands, carnival, and parade will go on for the three days over the holiday in 2015.
