On a blustery Tuesday afternoon, drivers came from nearly an hour away to buy chicken in a Davenport church's parking lot.

Charity Stoffer drove from Lowden, Iowa, to buy more than 100 pounds of chicken breasts.

"The size of the chicken is huge," she said.  "And the price is good."

This is Zaycon Foods.  It's a Spokane, Washington, company that finds power with numbers.

It sells food products by the case, and customers often buy more than one.

"We have a farm in Durant, and we actually have chickens," said Sandra Choate.  "It's easier to order this way than to butcher our own chickens."

These former grocers are trying a non-traditional approach.  Products are trucked in direct from the processor.

They specialize in fresh products without additives.

Chicken day is the most popular.  A case goes for about $80.  That translates to about $1.99 per pound.

Zaycon's Mike Smith was making the rounds in Davenport and Moline on Tuesday.

And what's the secret to its success?

"Good customer service is paramount," he said.

It's an old-fashioned philosophy with a high tech approach.

Customers order on the internet at http://www.zayconfoods.com.  Then, they pick up orders with drive-up service.

The company started just six years ago.  It now makes some 1,500 regular stops all over the country.

The truck comes about once a month to Davenport and Moline, where it sells a variety of meat products.

"We don't mind buying it in bulk and splitting it up ourselves," said Jamie Burt, Davenport.

That adds up to a lot of chicken, and plenty of satisfied customers.

"I was skeptical at first to know what the product looked like," Choate said.  "It's great."

"We came 35 to 40 miles," said Mark Jones, Fulton.  "It's well worth it."

Drive-through chicken that's really catching on in the Quad Cities.
