The Niabi Zoo will open for the 2015 season on Monday, March 23, 2015, despite the cold temperatures.

The animals were on display Saturday, March 21, 2015 when the zoo named its newest giraffe Genesis. Genesis Health System is the sponsor of the newest giraffe. The giraffe will not be on display for a couple of months though. Genesis needs to get acclimated to its new home first.

A new meerkat exhibit has been built over the winter. The meerkat is a small animal that's part of the mongoose family. The animal though, hasn't arrived at the zoo yet. Zoo Director Marc Heinzman says Niabi still has to get federal approval before the meerkat can live at the Niabi Zoo. The zoo has also remodeled some of its buildings, to try to get more people to come out.

"We're bringing in some new food services this year," Heinzman said. "So all in all, it's been a very busy off season, and I think the zoo visitors are really going to enjoy it."

The Niabi Zoo will offer free admission through Friday, March 27, 2015. The zoo will be open Monday through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The zoo will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays, for the rest of the season.
