From allegations of racism to hazing and sexual assault, several scandals are leaving a black eye on fraternities and sororities around the country. Local members say they're working to show all the good things about Greek life.
Greek life plays a big role at Monmouth College. They have four fraternities, three sororities and one co-ed fraternity on campus.
"We understand that there's a lot of benefits and there's a lot positive things that you take away from being in one," said Billy Bernard, Associate Director of the Wackerle Career and Leadership Program.
However, that can sometimes be overshadowed, especially when fraternities across the country are in the spotlight for several scandals. From the racist chant by a frat at the University of Oklahoma to a Facebook page, featuring nude photos of women involving a fraternity at Penn State.
"It gives really negative condemnations of fraternity life in general and I don't think its reflective any way on fraternities as a whole," said Clayton Brundige, President of Phi Delta Theta.
Fraternities at Monmouth College are working harder than ever to show the real meaning of Greek Life.
"Our students are donating a lot of their time to just working in the community," said Bernard.
They're also making sure to keep the conversation open to prevent an incident from happening there.
"When one of those events occur it shouldn't take away from the overall positive attributes of being part of a fraternity and sorority life," said Benard.
Bernard meets every other week with all the presidents for one-on-one conversations to discuss what's going on in the fraternities.
