City leaders in Rock Island are fighting to protect state funding for local government. Governor Bruce Rauner's proposal trims more than $600 million from city budgets across the state.

Monday night the Rock Island city council took action to get their message across to the Illinois General Assembly. They approved to send a letter to the Governor to express their concerns.

"We would have to eliminate a lot of things including a lot of personnel. Its something we're urging the governor to not do," said Rock Island Mayor, Dennis Pauley.

Back in February the Governor proposed a 50 percent reduction in the local share of income tax. For Rock Island that would mean $1.9 million in cuts. The city of Moline would see a $2.2 million loss.

In East Moline a little more than $1 million in cuts, leaving not many options for East Moline to offset the lost in revenue.

"It would be a severe hardship, not on just my community, but every community in the state of Illinois," said East Moline Mayor, John Thodos.

Mayor Thodos says if the Governor's budget were to pass, the city would have to look at layoffs and certain services would suffer.

The East Moline city council also approved to see a letter to the Governor's office.
