The DeLorean might not be back, but Doc and Marty McFly are thanks to Back in Time, a new documentary about the Back to the Future franchise.
Billed as “A one-of-a-kind documentary, which examines the unique cultural impact of the Back to the Future trilogy through interviews with cast, crew, and uber-fans of the series,” it’s set to be released on October 15, 2015.
“It’s a simple movie,” Michael J. Fox said in the trailer for the project. “It’s a human movie. I feel like we were on this ride together– I was on the screen, but we were all on this ride together.”
Featuring recent interviews with Fox, director Robert Zemeckis, Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson, and other stars on-screen and behind-the-scenes, the documentary, is funded in part through Kickstarter.
“I’m very proud of [the franchise],” said Zemeckis. “It’s pretty clever.”
“We’re shooting [Teen Wolf] in Pasadena,” Fox told the Archive of American Television back in 2010, “and I’m in Pasadena wearing a werewolf mask, and there was a company coming, scouting locations for a film, so we asked them what it was for, and they said they were scouting locations for a film Spielberg was producing called Back to the Future… and I remember thinking, “Now that would be great.””
“My favorite memory of ‘Back to the Future’ actually is seeing it!” Thompson told US Weekly in 2014. “I was engaged to Dennis Quaid at the time and the movie had been out for like two months and we went to the Cinerama Dome. They gave me a free parking spot and it was completely full and we stood in the back and watched the whole movie. People were just ecstatic!”
Originally released on July 3, 1985, Back to the Future became an instant cult classic, spending 11 weeks at number one nationwide. With a budget of $19 million, it made more than $380 million worldwide. That success lead to two sequels, Back to the Future II & III, released in 1989 and 1990.
