A 19-year-old from eastern Iowa was accused of trying to coerce an underage girl to engage in criminal sexual activity according to federal prosecutors.

Colton Rickels, 19, of Monticello, Iowa, was indicted March 4, 2015, in U.S. District Court in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.  The indictment alleges that Rickels tried to “persuade, induce, entice, and coerce a minor female to engage in criminal sexual activity” in October 2014.

Rickels was charged as part of the national Project Safe Childhood initiative, launched to combat child sexual exploitation.

Rickels was released on bond to await trial after appearing in federal court Monday, March 9.  Court records showed he was confined to his home and made to wear a GPS tracking device.  His trial was set for May 4.
