On Monday, March 9, Davenport School District Superintendent Dr. Art Tate is expected to present a prepared statement regarding the 2015-2016 fiscal year budget cuts.

In a school board meeting on Monday, February 23, Dr. Tate presented a presented a recommendation for next year that would cut roughly $3.5 million from the general fund. Most of the savings would come from early retirements, as well as a reduction in 25 teaching positions.

The 2015-2016 fiscal year reduction plan will have to be ready by early April. They are expected to make a decision in their next school board meeting on March 23.

“We’re trying to get close to an approved budget well ahead of that time in case there are any requirements that have something to do with employees,” said Johanson. “We want them to know about it as early as possible.”

Right now, the school district can only count on a 1.25 percent increase in state aid for the next fiscal year.

“I mean, offering 1.25 percent to districts when everyone knows that personnel costs go up three to four percent a year is absolutely irresponsible, illogical, and disrespectful,” said Dr. Tate.

According to a Davenport School Board member, Dr. Tate will be making a big announcement regarding some “very good news” for Davenport schools in Monday’s meeting.
