A state forest was hit by vandals in Lee County, Iowa.

Sometime between late Thursday, February 26, 2015 and early Monday, March 2, several areas of the Shimek State Forest were vandalized, according to DNR park technician Cody Brotherson.

Throughout areas of the state forest, more than 32 campsite makers were knocked down as well as an information kiosk and picnic area fencing, which includes more than 50 wooden posts, Brotherson said in a statement.

The damage was in the White Oak primitive campground, in the picnic area near Shagbark Lake and in the equestrian campground in the Lick Creek Unit, the statement said.

“Vandalism occurs occasionally in these more remote areas, but this is the worst single event in more than 10 years,” said Brothersen. “A loss like this impacts many people, but it is especially upsetting to members of our Friends of Shimek State Forest group, who take great pride in helping maintain and care for the area and its resources.”

DNR personnel, area law enforcement and the Friends of Shimek State Forest are investigating the situation.
