The Illinois legislature was considering a resolution to name the new Interstate 74 Bridge over the Mississippi River in honor of longtime local representative Lane Evans.

The former congressman was first elected to represent Illinois in 1982, and served until he stepped down in 2006 after he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Evans graduated from Alleman High School in Rock Island and he was a Vietnam War-era veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. He was considered a champion of veterans during his political career.

Representative Pat Verschoore introduced House Joint Resolution 31 in February, and Rep. Mike Smiddy signed on as chief co-sponsor of the resolution March 3, 2015.

“(Evans) became well known by his constituents and peers as a man of the people who cared deeply for the well-being of his fellow veterans,” the resolution said, as it also observed Evans’ service and advocacy for veterans issues and the Rock Island Arsenal.
