Fire destroys charter bus on Interstate 88

Eastbound lanes on Interstate 88 near Hillsdale, Illinois were closed to traffic for hours after a charter bus caught fire.

Eastbound lanes on Interstate 88 near Hillsdale, Illinois were closed to traffic for hours after a charter bus caught fire at mile marker 11, just one mile east of Hillsdale, around 7:45 p.m. Sunday, March 1, 2015, according to Illinois State Police.

"All 56 occupants (including the driver) were evacuated and transported from the scene to alternate transportation," said a spokesperson from the Illinois State Police.  Police later said the passengers were Amway employees who were on their way to Aurora, Illinois after attending a conference in Omaha, Nebraska.

Police said there were no reported injuries.

Drivers heading eastbound were being detoured off I-88 to Illinois Route 2 and back onto I-88 at Erie.

All lanes were reopened by 10 p.m.

Editor's Note: Initial reports indicated that only the driver was on board when the fire occurred. Illinois State Police confirmed that there were 56 people on board.
