Another Quad City school district is bracing for budget cuts, but this budget proposal has a silver lining.

The Rock Island/Milan school district is dealing with a little bit of relief, thanks to Governor Bruce Rauner's recent budget proposal. He recommended $300 million of additional funding for K-12 programs state-wide.

"Two weeks ago we presented a worse case scenario, deep funding cuts," said superintendent Mike Oberhaus.

At the last school board meeting, the board was looking at $5 million in cuts, including the elimination of extracurricular activities, even cutting some staff.

"The cuts were devastating it would have been very difficult to have a quality education system in Rock Island/Milan and we didn't want to do that," said Oberhaus.

The governor's new proposal would mean an additional $1.4 million for the district. The district's chief financial officer recommended a new plan that didn't include eliminating positions or curricular activities. The district would get savings from retirement, combining duties in the administrative office and reduce capital spending.

School districts are not expecting a final decision from lawmakers until late May.
