New poll results showed Iowans approve of the job Senators Joni Ernst, Chuck Grassley, and Governor Terry Branstad are doing, and are optimistic about the next few years in Iowa.

“Iowa seems to be an incumbent’s happy place these days,” said Quinnipiac University Poll Assistant Director Peter Brown.

Quinnipiac University polled voters in three so-called “swing states” of Iowa, Colorado and Virginia. Pollsters asked participants to rate their governors, U.S. Senators and about attitudes for certain hot-button issues in each of those states.

“Long-time Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad gets a 59 – 31 percent job approval rating from voters, who say 67 – 24 percent they are optimistic about the next four years with Gov. Branstad at the helm,” the poll results report said. Voters also supported U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley, 67 to 21 percent, and said 55 to 30 percent that he deserves to be reelected in 2016.

U.S. Senator Joni Ernst also got a favorable rating, while the margins were lower with Ernst receiving a 42 to 26 percent job approval rating. “The reverse gender gap that dogged her 2014 Senate campaign fades as men approve 45 – 25 percent while women approve 40 – 27 percent,” the results report said.

The poll was the result of surveys conducted between February 5 and 15, 2015, of nearly 1,100 voters in each of the three states.

Colorado and Virginia voters gave their governors and senators positive approval ratings as well. Colorado voters continued to support legalized recreational marijuana, but men gave it higher support than women and younger voters gave it higher approval and voters over 55 years of age disapproved by 46 to 50 percent.

“Virginia is much like Iowa in voter affection for top officials. The difference in Iowa is that the governor and senators are all Republicans, while in Virginia they are all Democrats. That’s quite a turnaround from the days not that long ago when The Old Dominion was solidly red,” Brown said.
