State releases vaccination rates for schools in Iowa

Iowa health authorities have released an audit report showing how many students are vaccinated at public schools across the state.

Iowa health authorities have released an audit report showing how many students are vaccinated at public schools across the state.

The audit shows the percentage of kindergarten through 12th grade students who presented valid certificates of immunization and who had received vaccines required by Iowa law for the 2013-2014 school year.  Records were not counted for schools with a total enrollment of fewer than 100 students.

"(The percentage of compliance) is calculated by dividing the number of valid certificates of immunization by total enrollment," the audit report said.

There were schools throughout the state that reported 100% of enrolled students were compliant with Iowa vaccination regulations, including schools in the News 8 viewing area such as Durant Elementary School in Cedar County, Hayes Catholic Elementary in Muscatine County, and Columbus Community Middle School in Louisa County.

The majority of schools reported more than 90 percent of students had showed proof they had received vaccines required by Iowa law.  Some schools were below the 90-percent compliance rate, notably including several schools in Jackson County, Iowa:  Maquoketa Middle School (85.76%), Bellevue Area Catholic School (85.99%), Easton Valley Elementary (82.76%) and Cardinal Elementary School (77.81%). Several schools in Washington County were also below the 90 percent mark: Highland Junior High (86.08%), Mid-Prairie High School (88.64%), Stewart Elementary School (86.37%), and Washington Junior High (87.20%).

Other area schools that reported less than 90% compliance included West Middle School in Muscatine County (87.93%), Highland Junior High in Washington County (86.08%), and Morning Star Academy in Scott County (89.71%).

The school with the lowest immunization compliance rate in Iowa was Maharishi School of the Age of Enlightenment in Jefferson County, where 47.19% of enrolled students were vaccinated according to the Iowa Department of Health.
