Incidents involving backed-up plumbing in the jail, frequently end with water in the sheriff’s office below the jail in Johnson County, Iowa.

It’s because the facility and plumbing are outdated, Sheriff Lonny Pulkrabek said in a report from KCRG. The most recent incident happened when an inmate flushed something down a toilet that plugged the main line and sewage overflowed from a toilet in the sheriff’s office Tuesday morning, February 17, 2015. Water also dripped onto the sheriff’s desk sometime over Valentine’s Day weekend.

Fans were used to help dry affected carpet, which will also need to be professionally cleaned.

“We’ve had several incidents (involving raw sewage),” Pulkrabek said. He said it was not clear whether inmates were intentionally clogging toilets to flood the sheriff’s office. Plumbing was not on the list of building improvements planned for the spring of 2015, the report said.
