A Davenport man is headed to prison for shooting his teenaged friend to death, and tearfully apologized to the victim's family during his sentencing.
"I am sorry. Deeply truly sorry for your loss and what has become of that night because I was drinking and smoking weed and did not consider what my actions might cause. I play that night over in my mind," said Devyn Fix, 29.
Judge John Telleen sentenced Fix to a sentence "not to exceed 15 years."
The judge said evidence showed the shooting of Thomas Taylor was an accident, but said Fix acted recklessly by drinking and pointing a loaded gun at people during a party last year.
Fix was also ordered to pay $150,000 in restitution.
Family members of Taylor gave victim impact statements before sentencing, urging the judge to impose the max.
"Thomas will never go to college, he'll never buy a first house," his dad, Todd Taylor said.
Taylor's grandmother said the family still hasn't been able to give him a proper burial, and showed a picture of his unmarked grave to Fix.
"We don't have the money for a headstone, this is what we get to look at, Devyn. A mound of dirt. A mound of dirt."
