Firefighters were on scene at an apartment fire in Burlington for roughly six hours.

The duplex-style apartment in the 300 block of Maple Street had heavy smoke and flames showing when firefighters arrived around 9:20 p.m. Wednesday, February 11, 2015. According to Fire Marshal Mark Crooks, the fire was under control shortly after 10 p.m.

The renter of the apartment was not home at the time, Crooks said. Nobody was injured.

Crooks said that the one unit sustained about $25,000 worth of damage. The building is insured and owned by Maple Hills Apartments.

“Firefighters were able to stop the fire before it reached the second apartment,” said Crooks.

More than a dozen firefighters responded; 11 from Burlington and three from the West Burlington Fire Department.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation by the Burlington Police and Fire Departments as well as the Iowa State Fire Marshal’s office.
