A home in rural Sherrard was severely damaged by fire that took hours to extinguish.

The fire started around 8 p.m. at 1606 320th Street on Monday, February 9, 2015. The log cabin home is just to the east of Fyre Lake. The home reportedly belongs to a member of the Mercer County Board.

Flames from the fire could be seen from blocks away Monday night. Crews from Sherrard, Viola, Coyne Center, and Orion responded.  Crews did have to truck in water because there are no fire hydrants near the home in Mercer County.

Firefighters with the Orion Community Fire Protection District said there were no injuries to report.  Volunteers from the American Red Cross said they were helping two adults and two children to ensure they have a safe place to stay.

Firefighters were still at the scene of the fire just before sunrise Tuesday, February 10.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
