After Davenport Community Schools lost longtime teacher and director Bill Sherwood, the Board of Directors had to choose someone to serve the remainder of his term.

St. Ambrose graduate Linda Hayes was chosen Wednesday, February 4, 2015 to serve in his place as a member on the Board of Directors, according to a statement from Davenport Community Schools. She will serve the remaining eight months of Sherwood’s term.

Sherwood was 68 years old when he passed away Wednesday, January 14.

He had been a teacher and director in the school district for 25 years.  Sherwood was elected for his position on the school board in 2011.

In regards to the school district, Hayes- a Davenport native, said she is focused mostly on the impact of poverty on student achievement, special needs students, and the district’s financial needs.

Hayes is continuing her education at St. Ambrose, going for a Masters in Organizational Leadership.

She was set to be sworn in on Monday, February 9 at the Board meeting.

Four of her grandchildren are students at Davenport schools.
