Davenport Mayor Bill Gluba said federal help is necessary to meet certain local education, transportation and infrastructure needs.

The meetings were part of the U.S. Conference of Mayors held in late January 2015 in Washington D.C.

Gluba said he planned to share a report with Davenport’s Police Department, and to concerned citizens, about strategies for building trust between police and the communities they serve.

The conference also covered ideas for easing income inequality through education, and a lifelong learning program idea he wanted to discuss with Davenport Community Schools Superintendent Art Tate.

“A lot of it was trying to encourage job creation in the United States,” Gluba said.

Gluba met with HUD about a proposed footbridge across East River Drive, and with Homeland Security about a $1.2-million federal grant to replace a 24-year-old fire department ladder truck, as he believes these and other infrastructure projects can help meet job creation goals.

“We don’t have the resources locally to fund these projects, so the federal government needs to get involved in funding these projects,” Gluba said.
