Davenport Mayor Bill Gluba says the city will support the building of a Martin Luther King Jr. monument and park. The park will be next to a new apartment building at the corner of 5th and Brady Street.

Gluba held a press conference on Friday, January 16, 2014 to announce the development. The apartment building will be built by Newbury Living, out of Des Moines. A spokeswoman with Newbury Living says 24 apartments will be built on the site for mixed and low-income residents.

Gluba says the site is very close to where Dr. King spoke in the only time that he was in Davenport. Gluba says Dr. King spoke at the Masonic Auditorium in 1965. He says the building is now owned by Palmer College. Mayor Gluba attended the speech that day.

There is no specific word on when construction will start. The project received a $3 million community development block grant as well.
