A military family is getting a new home for the new year in Bettendorf.
It's also mortgage-free.
Wells Fargo is teaming up with Operation Homefront to make the dream come true.
"Here's the key to your new home," said Angela Vander Werf, Wells Fargo, on Tuesday morning.
For Robert and Darlene Williams, the key to happiness is a new home.
"I just want to thank you for your service," said Amilee Santos, Operation Homefront. "It's an honor to get to do this."
"God bless America," Robert exclaimed.
Robert and Darlene entered their mortgage-free home for the first time on Tuesday.
"Wow, this is awesome," he said.
After living all over the world during a 20-year Army career, they now call Bettendorf home.
"This is not only for me, but for other veterans to give them hope," he said.
"We got a closet," Darlene exclaimed.
The little things mean so much.
"It gives me the ability to dream again," she said.
Wells Fargo and Operation Homefront selected them from an application process.
The Williams family will only need to pay property taxes.
"It's a strong foundation for them," said Vander Werf. "They'll start off on the right foot and have a roof over their heads."
"Thank God for Operation Homefront and Wells Fargo," Robert said.
As they tour the three bedrooms, it's a remarkable gift.
"It's a big transition when you come out of the military," Darlene said.
Their son and daughter, also military families, encouraged their parents to apply.
This is Operation Homefront's first project in the Quad Cities.
Nationwide, Wells Fargo has donated nearly 200 bank-owned properties to veterans during the past two years.
Wells Fargo also paid for extensive renovations and new appliances.
"I was ecstatic," said Robert, who now works at the Rock Island Arsenal. "Wow, can you believe this?"
The key to happiness for the Williams family? It must be their home with the American flag flying proudly outside.
"Iowa is our home," Robert concluded.
