With the winter solstice, the season officially arrives.
Sunday, December 21, 2014 marks the winter solstice, officially beginning at 5:03 p.m. Central Time, according to the National Weather Service.
This day not only marks the start of winter but also is the shortest day and longest night of the year.
If you're looking forward to more daylight time, this is a positive day for you. From this point forward, the days start to get longer until the longest day of the year- the summer solstice on June 21, 2015.
The winter solstice happens when the sun is directly over the Tropic of Capricorn, or as a report by Time explains, when the Northern Hemisphere is pointed at its furthest distance from the sun.
