Some U.S.  military veterans have reported getting phone calls from someone posing as a Veterans Administration representative asking for personal information.

The reported calls are part of a possible scam, according to the VA.

The veterans reported callers telling them the VA was working on their pending claim, or that they have been awarded a grant from the VA.

“The caller is requesting personal information, either their Social Security number or bank account information,” according to an advisory distributed by P.J. Hymes Jr., commander of VFW Post 1303 in Rock Island, Illinois.

The alleged scam was discovered when an alert potential victim called the VA toll-free number, and confirmed no notes were recorded for any such calls to her from from the Veterans Administration.

The alleged scam calls reportedly originated from the number 202-211-2544, the advisory said.
