An Iowa family has made it their mission to help fight hunger in their hometown. They're making sure no student goes hungry.

Six years ago J.J Caston and her family decided they wanted to do something to help others. At the time they were living in Indiana.

"We tried to adopt a couple of times and it just didn't work out. I said well maybe we're not supposed to have more than one in our family, maybe we're supposed to feed several hundred," said Caston.

They started a non-profit that helps feed elementary students that are less fortunate. Three years ago the Castons moved to Burlington, Iowa and decided to start the charity there called Homeplate Iowa.

"Their last meal sometimes is lunch on Friday until they get back to school and have breakfast on Monday," said Caston.

At the beginning they were helping 27 students, now they're up to 270 kids twice a month.

"It's a sign of the times, there's a lot of hurting families and we're just trying to do our part," said Caston.

Every other week the Castons, along with help from others in the community, bag up food to give students to take home for the weekend. Both J.J and her husband Josh have full-time jobs, sometimes they use their lunch break to get the food ready.

"It's a great feeling, but it's sad at the same time I wish there wasn't one box in this room," said Caston.

Homeplate Iowa is in the majority of the elementary schools in Burlington. The Castons hope to one day be able to provide kids food every week.
