University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics named Ebola care center

The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics has become the only Ebola treatment center in Iowa.

The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics has become the only Ebola treatment center in Iowa.

“UI Hospitals and Clinics began working in mid-August on its preparations for care for patients with suspected or confirmed Ebola infection.  UI officials report they are prepared to provide excellent care for such patients, while safeguarding the health and wellbeing of other patients, visitors, staff, and the community,” said a statement from UI Hospitals and Clinics spokesman Tom Moore.

Their facility has a dedicated area that is isolated, including its air supply, from the rest of the hospital, Moore said.  They have also ensured that staff that might care for a patient with an Ebola infection would not care for other patients, and that medical equipment used to care for a patient with an Ebola infection would not be used to care for other patients.

Two other hospitals – both in Des Moines – agreed to serve as Ebola screening facilities if needed.

“There are currently no reported cases of Ebola infections anywhere in Iowa,” Moore said.
