A group in the Quad Cities took advantage of the warm winter weather to work on a unique type of garden.

On Saturday, December 13th, 2014, the Rotary Club of Rock Island sponsored an Urban Garden Work Day in downtown Rock Island.

Rock Island Rotary is partnering with Activate Rock Island, Rock Island Urban Gardens, and Broadway Presbyterian Church to build raised beds and wheelchair-accessible gardens for the senior residents of the Coventry Apartments and two of the ARC homes in Rock Island.

Organizers say it's all about "increasing access to gardening opportunities for all community members and providing a healthy food supply to their homes."

"People with disabilities typically have difficulty with full physical actions of getting down on the ground and gardening like we think of gardening and so they just don't have that opportunity," added Project Coordinator and the Rotary's First Vice President, John Phillips.

In addition, members are constructing a solar food dehydrator. That and the new garden beds are expected to be installed in the spring.
