That plastic driver's license in your wallet could soon be replaced by using an app on your smartphone.
Iowa is reportedly moving forward on a plan to use an electronic version as the official license issued to drivers in the state.
Drivers would be able to use a mobile smartphone app, instead of a traditional plastic driver's license, to show state-issued identification according to a report from The Des Moines Register. The electronic license would be accepted by airport security screening and by Iowa law enforcement during traffic stops.
The app would be secured with a pin number needed for verification.
The driver's license app would be available in Iowa sometime in 2015, the Des Moines Register reported. Iowa and Illinois already allowed motorists to use their smartphones to show proof of insurance during a traffic stop according to carinsurance.com.
Drivers would still be able to use the traditional plastic license if desired.
