Construction crews removed the barriers that prevented Interstate 74 drivers from exiting at River Drive in Moline before the sun rose Monday morning.

Right now, drivers get off the I-74 Bridge near 23rd Street in Moline. Drivers have to take 4th Avenue to get back to downtown at this time. Work to re-configure River Drive in Moline is nearing completion. The Illinois Department of Transportation says that the ramps for the new I-74 Bridge will be to the north of River Drive, instead of the south. That's part of the reason River Drive is being realigned now.

"This project puts in all the new storm sewers and water mains in the system through this area," IDOT Engineer John Wegmeyer said Monday, December 8, 2014. "When we get around to doing the bridge, it will be one less street that will be greatly impacted by the construction of the bridge."

More roadwork in the area east of downtown is still expected through the Winter into this Spring. The on-ramp to I-74 in Moline will remain closed until the Spring.
