Several school district leaders across Rock Island County are taking another stab at a penny sales tax, as Moline's school board voted to put it on the ballot again in 2015.

The measure has been voted down twice before, and school districts hope the third time's a charm.

A one cent sales tax increase means people would pay a penny more for every dollar they spend. If voters were to approve the penny sales tax, it could generate $13 million yearly for school improvements in Rock Island County.

"People can dwell on not liking taxes, and a tax being a negative, and I understand that, because I don't like paying any more than the next person.  But, in this particular case, I think there are a lot of positives for their community as a whole," said Moline Superintendent Dr. David Moyer.

Moyer said there are improvements to facilities that simply cannot wait any longer.

School boards representing 51 percent of Rock Island County would need to vote in favor of the sales tax to get the issue placed on the April 2015 ballot.

Depending on where you live in Rock Island County, the sales tax rate could run between 7.75 percent to more than 10 percent.
