Man dies after being pulled from burning building in DeWitt

A 67-year-old man died after he was pulled from the burning apartment building where he lived in DeWitt, Iowa.

A 67-year-old man died after he was pulled from the burning apartment building where he lived in DeWitt, Iowa.

Fire was reported in the building in the 300 block of 12th Street just after 10 p.m. Tuesday, December 2, 2014.

DeWitt Police officers found an unconscious man inside the building, but they could not pull the man to safety because intense heat and smoke forced them to retreat.

Firefighters rescued the 67-year-old unconscious man, and he was taken by ambulance to a hospital in DeWitt.

The man was pronounced dead shortly after he arrived at the hospital.

The man's name was withheld until his next-of-kin could be properly notified.

No other injuries were immediately reported.

Firefighters from DeWitt, Welton and Grand Mound fire departments battled the blaze.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation.
