Millions of strollers recalled for risk of finger amputation

Graco and Century recalled nearly five million strollers because the folding sides can pinch – or even amputate – a child’s finger.

The recall involves about 4.7 million units sold in the U.S. plus about 202,000 sold in Canada and more than 10,000 sold in Mexico.

Eleven finger injuries have been reported, including six fingertip amputations and four partial fingertip amputations.

“This recall includes eleven Graco and Century-branded strollers with model names Aspen, Breeze, Capri, Cirrus, Glider, Kite, LiteRider, Sierra, Solara, Sterling and TravelMate,” said a recall notice from the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The recalled strollers were sold for between $40 and $170 at Target, Toys R Us, Walmart and other stores nationwide and online between August 2000 and November 2014.

Customers with recalled strollers should contact Graco for a free repair kit, which will be available at the beginning of December, the recall notice said.

“While waiting for a repair kit, caregivers should exercise extreme care when unfolding the stroller to be certain that the hinges are firmly locked, before placing a child in the stroller.  Caregivers are advised to immediately remove the child from a stroller that begins to fold, to keep their fingers from the side hinge area,” the recall notice said.

The recalled strollers were made between August 1, 2000 and September 25, 2014; manufacture dates and model numbers are on a white label on the bottom of the stroller leg, just above the rear wheel.
