An Illinois man has been charged with the murder of an 8-month-old baby.

At first 28-year-old Jose M. Nieto-Roman, who Illinois State Police say was the live-in boyfriend, was considered a person of interest in the death investigation of a Beardstown, Illinois baby.

Nieto-Roman was being held in the Morgan County Jail for child endangerment, according to the Illinois State Police, and was already in custody when he was charged with two counts of murder and one count of aggravated battery to a child. The arrest warrant was issued by the Cass County States Attorney Wednesday, November 19, 2014.

“Agents from the Zone 4 Pittsfield Office served the warrant on Nieto-Roman at the Morgan County Jail,” said a statement from the Illinois State Police.

Police said in a statement that an autopsy on the baby was conducted November 1. It revealed that the baby had injuries consistent with blunt force trauma and third degree burns.

Nieto-Roman’s bond was set at $5 million.
