Moline's 53rd Street is a half-mile longer these days.  But it didn't cost the city or cash-strapped Illinois any money.

"We're able to build it and pay for it," said Pastor Tim Bowman, Calvary Church of the Quad Cities.

The large congregation, all 1,500 parishoners, certainly came through.  It raised a million dollars for the project.

Remarkably, its giving to local outreach and other projects also kept growing.

"For the last several years, we've been setting aside a portion of our budget, knowing that this road was going to come up," said Pastor Bowman.

That explains heavy equipment on the move since September.  There's new pavement and sidewalks for the future.

And, they'll be giving it all back to Moline.

"This will be our worship center," said Pastor Bowman.

The congregation eventually plans to build in the 80-acre wooded area.  Their present church will then become a community center.

The street extension will also ease transportation needs at The Arc's Opportunity Center,  which is just around the corner.

"This is a nice, wide road," said Sarah Wright, The Arc of the Quad Cities. "I know our staff will be thankful, and I know the individuals who go here every day will be thankful as well."

The congregation will be lining that portion of 53rd Street at 10:30, on Sunday, November 23.  That's when an outdoor service will welcome this corridor to the community.

"We believe that the church of tomorrow has got to think community, not just Sunday morning," Pastor Bowman said.

It's a street with style and Divine intervention.  All of this seems to drive home a point.

"This is a good thing for the city, our church and for the community here at Heritage," he concluded.

They're paving the way and paying for it, too.
