On a beautiful November day, the Marine from Rock Island came home.

Former Congressman Lane Evans was saluted for his service, and for his service to others.

"I think he'll be remembered as a champion," said Lane's brother, Doyle Evans.  "But also as a decent, common person who treated everyone with respect and love."

Since Monday marks the birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps and Tuesday is Veterans Day, it's a poignant and meaningful service at the Rock Island National Cemetery.

Family, friends and colleagues came together for reflection and renewal.

They all had this in common: the privilege of knowing a kind man who gave his all in the 17th District.

"As President Obama said, he was an American hero," recalled Steve Vetzner, who served as Lane's longtime press secretary.  "But he was the genuine article.  He was somebody who was both your friend and a good role model for you."

While the service recognized his time in the Marines, it also honored his commitment to all veterans during his long congressional career.

When veterans needed help, they could count on Lane Evans.  Whether it was trying to secure better benefits or developing landmark legislation on Agent Orange, he was always there for them.

"He would always ask, 'How can I help?  How can I help the veterans?'" recalled Vietnam veteran Jett Bork.

"It was really great that somebody stood up for their rights to see that they got what they deserved," added Roland Rasso,  Mexican American Veterans Association.

Monday's last trip proved to be a real Marine homecoming for Lane Evans.

"He was a champion of everyone, a voice for everybody," Vetzner concluded.

"Lane touched a lot of lives," Doyle concluded.  "He meant a lot to a lot of people.  We will miss him,  but  he'll be remembered, I believe, forever."

At the Rock Island Arsenal, a fitting salute for a fine man.
