One man died after a collision with two other vehicles in Milan.

Initial reports indicated a driver was trapped after a fiery crash involving a semi and two other vehicles near the Greater Quad City Auto Auction in Milan, Illinois.

The incident was reported just before 11:30 a.m. Friday, November 7, 2014, at 4015 78th Avenue.  The road is also known as Indian Bluff Road at that location.

A spokesperson from the Rock Island County Sheriff's Department said a Chevy pick-up, driven by a 44-year-old James W. Friday from Coal Valley, was heading eastbound on 78th Avenue and was getting ready to turn left into a parking lot. A 32-year-old Orion woman driving a Chevy Malibu ran into the back of the pick-up, pushing it into the westbound lane.

The pick-up was instantly struck by a westbound semi hauling an empty grain trailer; both vehicles left the roadway on the north end of 78th Ave., according to the sheriff's department.

The westbound semi struck a utility pole and the pick-up caught fire. Initial reports indicated the semi may have overturned, but it was upright when the News 8 crew arrived.

Before the blazing pick-up was completely engulfed in flames, a spokesperson from the sheriff's department said a passing motorist and workers from a business nearby pulled Friday out of his vehicle.

About an hour after the crash, Rock Island County Sheriff's Department Captain Darren Hart confirmed one person died at the scene.  It was later released that Friday was pronounced dead at the scene as a result of the collision with the semi.

Police expected 78th Avenue to remain closed until after 1 p.m.  Nearby businesses were also temporarily without electricity.

Two other people suffered minor injuries in the wreck, Hart said.

The crash remains under investigation and charges are pending. The name of the victim was not immediately released pending notification of family.
