It was a close race between the candidates running to represent the 71st District of Illinois.

Several hours after the polls closed Democrat incumbent Mike Smiddy was the projected winner by fewer than 300 votes.

With 100% of precincts reporting, Smiddy received 17,499 votes, Jim Wozniak got 17,218 votes, according to unofficial results from the Illinois Secretary of State’s office.

Smiddy has served in the 71st District since January 2013.

It was a second defeat in two consecutive elections for Wozniak; he also ran for Rock Island County State’s Attorney in 2012, losing to John McGehee.  Wozniak worked as an Assistant State’s Attorney until he resigned to campaign for the Illinois House seat.

Illinois law allows candidates to request a recount if their votes received totals 95% of votes counted for the declared winner.  Recount requests are rare, and there was no indication from Wozniak the morning after the election that any such request might be made.
