Joni Ernst becomes first woman to represent Iowa in U.S. Senate

Republican Joni Ernst will be the first woman ever elected to represent Iowa in the U.S. Senate.

Ernst battled in a race, often seen as a dead heat, to earn the Senate seat being vacated by the retiring Tom Harkin.

With 73% of the precincts reporting about an hour-and-a-half after polls closed, Ernst had 51% of the vote in Iowa.

Democrat Bruce Braley had 45% of the vote.

That support for Ernst grew as results were counted. With 99% of precincts reporting, Ernst held 52% of the vote.

Ernst delivered remarks thanking her supporters in an acceptance speech just after 10:30 p.m. on election night.
