A 41-year-old man from Hanover, Illinois faced criminal charges after he allegedly beat a woman unconscious and used a fire extinguisher to assault another man.

The Jo Daviess County Sheriff’s Office reported receiving “numerous calls” reporting a person, who appeared to be suffering from serious head injuries, walking on Route 84 in Hanover just after 10 p.m. Monday, October 27, 2014.

Deputies said the victim, a 42-year-old man from Hanover, had facial and head injuries – including a large cut on his forehead – that he allegedly suffered during an altercation with 41-year-old Doyle Hobbs, also of Hanover.  Hobbs allegedly used a fire extinguisher as a weapon during an altercation.

When Hobbs’ 38-year-old girlfriend intervened, Hobbs allegedly “struck (her) body multiple times and hit her in the head, rendering her unconscious,” police said.

Hobbs then left in a car with two people from Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.  The vehicle was later stopped on Route 84 and Hobbs was arrested.

Court records showed Hobbs was charged with one felony count of aggravated battery with great bodily harm, one misdemeanor count of domestic battery and one misdemeanor count of possession of drug paraphernalia.  Police said the drug charge was related to methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia found in the car when they found Hobbs.

Hobbs was appointed a public defender at his first court appearance in the case Wednesday, October 29, 2014.  He was held in the Jo Daviess County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bond.

The two Wisconsin residents Hobbs was with were each charged with one count of possession of drug paraphernalia.  Court records showed they were each released on bond to later face the charges in court.

Police said the woman injured in the altercation refused medical treatment; the injured man was taken by ambulance to an area hospital where he was treated and later released.
